Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you located? 1111 Noble Street Downtown Anniston next to the Dark Horse Saloon. Look for the sign above the door that says "Abracadabra Ballroom Dance." I also teach ballroom dance lessons, so I teach guitar lessons in the same building as the dance studio.
Do you teach other instruments? Yes. We also offer lessons in bass guitar, banjo, and piano.
Is my child old enough to start taking guitar lessons? As a general rule, children ages 6 and up are ready for lessons if they can follow directions, can focus, and are motivated to learn. This article from acoustic guitar magazine has some great insight on this topic.https://acousticguitar.com/is-my-child-old-enough-to-learn-guitar/
Am I too old to learn to play guitar? I believe we are never too old to learn. We are often told that children learn faster than adults. But I have been teaching adults for many years, and I find that adults possess many skills that come with maturity that make them good learners too. They just learn in a different way. As long as you are motivated to learn, then you can do it, If you have always wanted to play guitar, give it a try. You may be surprised what you are capable of.
What kind of guitar do I need? If you have a guitar then you should bring it to the first lessons. If you do not have a guitar, let me know before the lesson and I will have one there for you to play that day. Some people start with acoustic guitar and some start with electric. Both are welcome, and both have benefits and drawbacks. Some teachers recommend starting on electric. Some prefer acoustic. Both have pros and cons. You must decide which one is right for you and we can take it from there. I can help walk you through the decision process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m4H8aIsTBQ&t=468s
What factors should I consider when purchasing a guitar? The most important aspect of choosing a guitar is making sure that your guitar is playable. Most guitars require professional setup to be playable. I can assess the playability of your guitar in your first lesson. I can recommend a professional if you need a setup. The second most important factor is guitar size. This is especially important for children. If the guitar is too large, then it will be difficult to play.
Do I have to sign a contract? No, we do not require a contract for lessons. You can pay as you go. Some people prefer to pay for multiple lessons at once for convenience, and you are welcome to do that. But you can pay for one lesson at a time, and you do not have to commit to taking a specific number of lessons.
Do you require auto draft on bank account? No, we do not. Some studios require that you set up an auto payment system that is automatically deducted from your bank account each month. We do not do this.
What forms of payment do you take? We are currently accepting cash or check only.
Do you take Venmo? Not at this time, but we are considering it for the future.
How long should my lesson be? That depends upon you and your unique situation. Most students begin with a 30 minute lesson. Some choose to take longer lessons as they advance. For young children, a 30 minute lesson is recommended.
What hours do you teach? We offer lessons Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. We have time slots available in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. We will find a time that works for you that is available and go from there.
Can I try just one lesson? Absolutely! It is very important that you feel you have found a teacher who is a good match for you. You can schedule one lesson and go from there.
Will my child receive homework? Yes, your child will be given clear assignments for each lesson so that you can help them stay on track.
Do you have a waiting room where I can sit during my child's lesson? Yes, we have a comfortable waiting room available.
